First lady Melania Trump will preside over the United Nations Security Council on Monday, marking the first time a sitting U.S. first lady has taken the gavel as America begins its monthlong presidency.
Her opening session will center on education, technology, peace and security, themes her allies say align with her mission that lasting peace begins with what children are taught.
A source close to the first lady told Fox News Digital that she plans to stress the role of education and knowledge in building long-term peace.
“The first lady is reinventing her role and this marks just another groundbreaking achievement for her,” the source told Fox News Digital.
“It is the first time in history a first lady will address the security council, keeping to her mission of empowering the next generation with education and technology.”
For years, first ladies were largely limited to ceremonial duties, but Melania Trump is stepping into a forum usually reserved for heads of state, ambassadors and top diplomats.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Michael Waltz praised the decision and said her message matches the administration’s broader priorities.
“It is fitting that the first lady, a passionate and tireless advocate for children, will preside over the first day of America’s presidency of the Security Council,” Waltz told Fox News Digital.

“Her message of helping the helpless through education and technology fits exactly with our mission at the U.N., to achieve meaningful and lasting peace,” Waltz told Fox News Digital.
“As a green beret and now diplomat, I have seen firsthand that peace prevails where children are taught and not terrorized.”

The Security Council presidency rotates monthly among members, giving the United States the authority to shape the agenda and tone for its month.
This month, America’s opening remarks will come from the first lady, who plans to emphasize children, education and stability rather than typical diplomatic platitudes.
She has remained focused on child welfare, online safety and education-related initiatives, while pushing programs tied to innovation and technology.
At a time when many Americans view global institutions as bloated, weak and disconnected from everyday life, her remarks are expected to be direct and practical.
On Monday, she will deliver that case from one of the most powerful tables in the world.
