Savannah Guthrie plans to return to New York City after nearly a month in Arizona while the search for her mother remains unresolved.
Return, family and search
Sources told the Daily Mail that the “Today” show co-host intends to head back this weekend and is confronting the painful reality that finding 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie could take years.
Nancy was taken from her bed in the early hours of Feb. 1 at her longtime home in Tucson’s upscale Catalina Foothills.
Since the abduction, Savannah and her family have remained in Arizona holding out hope while enduring relentless anguish.
In a tearful social media video Savannah said it had been 24 days since their mother was taken and that every hour and minute had been agony.
She said the family still believes in a miracle and is “blowing on the embers of hope,” as her sister put it.
She also acknowledged that her mother may already be gone and that the family needs to know where she is.
The family is offering a reward of up to $1 million for information that leads to Nancy’s recovery.
Investigation and criticism
The probe is now a joint effort between the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI, and frustration has mounted over the investigation.
Law enforcement sources have criticized Sheriff Chris Nanos for tightly controlling the probe and limiting public updates.
Nanos has pushed back on speculation, calling theories that surveillance images were taken on different days “purely speculative.”
Video released by the FBI shows a masked, armed individual at Nancy’s doorstep shortly before investigators believe she was abducted.
Sources told ABC News and CNN that one image appears to show the suspect without a backpack, which has raised questions about possible prior surveillance.
Authorities say there are no visible timestamps on those images.
Home ties and return to the show
Savannah’s husband, Michael Feldman, and their two young children remain in New York.
NBC has reportedly left the door open for her return to Studio 1A.
“She can’t stay in Arizona forever,” a source told the Daily Mail.
