Poll Shows SOTU Bolstered Support for Trump’s Border and Economic Agenda

President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address drew strong support from viewers, according to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS, confirming his border and economic themes resonate with his base.

Nearly two-thirds of viewers reported at least a somewhat positive reaction, with 38% describing their response as very positive.

Media coverage noted the audience skewed Republican, which is typical for State of the Union viewers who tend to be politically engaged and invested.

More significantly, the address appears to have increased viewers’ confidence in Trump.

Support rose from 54% before the speech to 64% afterward for those who said his policies would move the country in the right direction.

The share saying Trump has the right priorities climbed from 44% before the address to 54% immediately following it.

This shift suggests his case for tougher border enforcement, firmer trade policy and a reset on economic priorities landed with voters seeking direction after years of inflation and instability.

On immigration, 62% of viewers said his policies would move the country in the right direction.

The same 62% also said the same about his economic agenda.

Even critics acknowledged immigration remains an area of strength for the president, and while some dissatisfied viewers thought he focused too much on the issue, far fewer said he focused too little.

The economy, especially the cost of living, remained a central concern with a majority wanting Trump to address inflation and affordability before the speech.

Afterward, 53% said he gave the issue the right amount of focus while 45% wanted more emphasis.

Confidence in Trump’s ability to make living more affordable was mixed, with 31% saying they had a lot of confidence and 29% expressing some confidence.

Forty percent said they had none, highlighting the political challenge of reversing years of price increases.

On trade, viewers were roughly split on tariffs, reflecting debate about whether aggressive measures are necessary to counter foreign competitors or risk overreach.

Where he stood out was on leadership, with 45% saying they had a lot of confidence in his ability to provide real leadership for the country.

Forty-three percent expressed strong confidence in his ability to use U.S. military power responsibly, and 38% said they were highly confident in his decision-making on Iran.

State of the Union speeches rarely produce dramatic changes in national approval ratings in a deeply divided country.

A separate CNN poll conducted before the address showed Trump with a 36% approval rating among the broader public.

Still, the night’s results indicate that among those paying close attention, Trump reinforced support for his hardline immigration stance and America-first economic message.
