Eric Dane, the actor best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on “Grey’s Anatomy,” has died after a lengthy battle with ALS. He was 53.
Dane’s family confirmed his death Thursday in a statement.
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the statement began.
It continued, “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world. Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
Born in San Francisco, Dane launched his career in the early 1990s with guest roles on popular television shows before landing a breakout part on “Charmed” in 2000. His rise to mainstream fame came in 2006 when he joined “Grey’s Anatomy” as the charismatic surgeon nicknamed “McSteamy,” a role that made him a household name.

Behind the scenes, Dane struggled with substance abuse during his time on the show and later sought treatment. He departed the series in 2012 and went on to star as a naval commander in the TNT drama “The Last Ship.”
In April 2025, Dane publicly revealed he had been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive neurological condition that attacks nerve cells controlling voluntary muscles.

“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” he said at the time. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
Despite the diagnosis, Dane continued working and became an outspoken advocate for ALS awareness, even speaking with lawmakers about improving access to treatments and clinical trials.
He is survived by actress Rebecca Gayheart and their daughters, Billie and Georgia.
