At least two people were killed in an apparent mass shooting at an indoor ice rink in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, on Monday afternoon, according to local reports.
Police told WPRI 12 that the suspect is dead. Local sports reporter Branden Mello said one of the victims also died.
The gunfire erupted during a boys’ hockey game at Lynch Arena, an indoor skating facility on Andrew D. Ferland Way. A 2 p.m. matchup between Coventry and Blackstone Valley Schools had been scheduled.
Officials later confirmed to Target 12 that a male suspect and a female victim were killed. Four other people were taken to the hospital. Their conditions were not immediately released, and authorities said no names had been made public as of 4 p.m.
Investigators are examining whether the violence stemmed from a possible domestic dispute.
Mello reported that the shots came from behind the stands. He also said a local father is being hailed as a “hero” after allegedly grabbing a gun from the shooter. The suspect was believed to have had a second weapon.
One student leaving the rink told 12 News he remembered hearing several “bangs,” followed by panic as spectators realized the sounds were gunshots. People then rushed for the exits.
Roughly a dozen shots can be heard in video from a live-stream of the game that circulated on social media Monday.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
