Charlie Puth Sings America 250-Themed National Anthem Rendition At Super Bowl LX

The Super Bowl pregame festivities got a shakeup this year when Brandi Carlisle performed an America 250-themed rendition of “America The Beautiful” ahead of Super Bowl LX.

Carlisle, an 11-time Grammy nominee, performed the song on acoustic guitar with accompanying strings support from the Nashville-based  SistaStrings. As Carlisle sang “from sea to shining sea,” the Jumbotron lit up with skylines of prominent American cities, from Massachusetts to California.

It also featured an appearance from active duty U.S. service members, specifically the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing. Troops were seen saluting live from their current deployment in the Middle East.

Carlisle’s “America The Beautiful” rendition was followed by the national anthem, which was performed by Charlie Puth. That performance also took on an America 250th theme, with similar visuals and another appearance from the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing.

Puth is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and producer, best known for his breakout hit “See You Again” (featuring Wiz Khalifa, from the Furious 7 soundtrack), which became one of the best-selling singles. He has also penned chart-topping hits like “Attention,” “We Don’t Talk Anymore” (with Selena Gomez), and “Marvin Gaye” (with Meghan Trainor).

He rose to fame through YouTube covers and collaborations, has four Grammy nominations, and is recognized for his vocal range, piano skills, and production work across pop and R&B, according to a profile from Variety.

This year’s performance was notable, as the annual flyover suffered a rare deviation. Originally, the plan included two Air Force F-22 Raptors to pair fifth-generation fighters alongside the Navy’s F-35Cs, which was reflected in the commemorative flight suit patch.

However, the F-22s were pulled at the last minute due to increased operational tempo and reassignment to real-world missions. Specific details on the deviation were not disclosed by the Pentagon, though the switch-up comes amid heightened tensions with Iran.

To fill the gap, F-15C Eagles from the California Air National Guard were added late in planning.
