A suspect is in custody after at least two National Guard soldiers were shot in downtown Washington D.C. on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident took place close to the Farragut Metro Station, within walking distance to the White House. Two sources familiar with the incident told Fox News that the soldiers were shot about a mile from the White House.
President Donald Trump confirmed that the shooting took place and provided additional details in a Truth Social post. Trump revealed that both soldiers were in “critical” condition in separate hospitals, adding that the “animal” who fired upon them was also wounded, presumably when law enforcement or additional National Guard personnel returned fire.
“God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!” the post continued.
Emergency vehicles were seen responding to the area and at least one helicopter landed on the National Mall.
The Joint DC Task Force confirmed they were responding to an incident in the vicinity of the White House in the movements after reports of the shooting. A spokesperson for the task force did not provide details on whether the soldiers were shot, however.
The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department also confirmed that it was responding to reports of a shooting in the area but did not provide additional details. The department further confirmed that several nearby buildings had been placed on lockdown.

The Associated Press reported that a shooter is in custody, though they did not provide additional details.
“Please join me in praying for the two National Guardsmen who were just shot moments ago in Washington D.C,” Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem posted on X. “[DHS] is working with local law enforcement to gather more information.”
This is a developing story. Additional details will be added to this report as they become available.
