The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed late Saturday that several U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents were fired upon in what officials are calling a “coordinated attack” during an immigration enforcement operation in Chicago.
According to a DHS statement, the agents were carrying out enforcement activity near 26th Street and Kedzie Avenue when a male suspect driving a black Jeep opened fire on federal vehicles before fleeing the scene. The gunman’s whereabouts remain unknown. In addition, DHS reported that an “unknown” number of protesters hurled paint cans, bricks, and other objects at the agents during the chaos.
Chicago police were called in to assist federal officers as the situation escalated. The agency described the scene as “dynamic,” emphasizing that the investigation remains ongoing and the suspects are still at large.
Video circulating online shows a helicopter hovering over law enforcement officers as they attempt to regain control of the area. On the ground was Greg Bovino, the Border Patrol’s Commander at Large, who personally assessed the unfolding scene. Bovino oversees “Operation Midway Blitz,” a recent initiative aimed at targeting illegal reentry networks and human smuggling operations across the Midwest.
As Bovino and his team of federal agents attempted to secure the site, chaos broke out again. According to eyewitnesses, a large group of agitators — several of whom appeared to be shouting in Spanish — began pelting the officers with objects as tensions boiled over.
The incident was captured in shocking footage shared by The Post Millennial, showing the moment Border Patrol agents came under attack amid a surge in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations throughout Chicago.
“Chaos erupts in Chicago as Border Patrol agents reportedly fired upon during increased ICE operations,” the outlet reported on X.
In an official statement, DHS condemned the violence, warning that it reflects a “dangerous and growing trend” of attacks on law enforcement.
“This incident was not an isolated event, but reflects the dangerous and growing trend of violence. In the last two months we have seen an increased number of assaults on federal law enforcement officers during their operations,” DHS said. “These confrontations show the daily dangers that our agents are exposed to and the increasing aggression towards law enforcement. The violence must stop.”
This latest ambush comes just weeks after another violent episode targeting federal agents in the city. In late October, officers conducting immigration enforcement were “boxed in” by multiple vehicles and confronted by armed attackers. For weeks, DHS officials say, federal officers in Chicago — particularly those operating near the ICE detention facility in Broadview — have faced escalating threats and organized hostility.
Saturday’s shooting appears to fit a disturbing pattern of coordinated, leftist-organized attacks on federal officers. Earlier this summer, over the July 4 weekend, an Antifa-linked group staged an ambush outside an ICE facility in Alvarado, Texas. During that attack, a local police officer was struck in the neck and seriously injured after militants used fireworks and vandalism to lure agents into a trap, where another group lay in wait with semiautomatic weapons. Eleven individuals were later identified as being connected to that operation.
Now, federal investigators are examining whether Saturday’s Chicago shooting is part of the same network of violent anti-police extremists.
While officials have not confirmed the shooter’s identity, DHS sources say the level of coordination and timing of the attack suggest an organized effort — one designed to intimidate law enforcement officers and disrupt ongoing federal operations.
The Biden Administration has remained largely silent on the incident so far, though Republican lawmakers have already begun demanding answers and increased federal protection for agents.
As the investigation continues, DHS has reiterated its call for calm and cooperation, stressing that agents across the country are now facing “unprecedented hostility.”
“The violence must stop,” the agency said in its closing statement — a sobering reminder of just how dangerous the war against America’s law enforcement has become.
