President Donald Trump will meet top Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress on Sept. 29 to discuss a government funding deal.
The meeting comes just one day before the Sept. 30 deadline to avoid a partial shutdown.
The Meeting
The White House confirmed the meeting Saturday evening.
Trump will host the session in the Oval Office.
Donald Trump
Attendees include Speaker Mike Johnson and Leader John Thune.
Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer will also attend.
The gathering will be the first bipartisan session in weeks.
The Deadline
Federal funding expires after Sept. 30.
A partial shutdown would halt non-essential work.
Federal employees could be furloughed without pay.
Essential services would continue under emergency rules.
Back pay for furloughed workers is guaranteed by law.
The Dispute
Republicans back a stopgap bill through Nov. 21.
The House has already passed the measure.
Mike Johnson, John Thune
Senate Republicans fell short of 60 votes last week.
Democrats want the bill to extend ACA subsidies.
Trump and GOP leaders oppose those healthcare demands.
Leaders’ Statements
Schumer and Jeffries said Democrats are ready to negotiate.
They promised to avoid what they call a GOP “healthcare crisis.”
Hakeem Jeffries, Chuck Schumer
Ryan Wrasse, spokesman for John Thune, blamed Democrats for obstruction.
He said Schumer is “getting nervous” over party divisions.
Wrasse called the Republican plan “an easy way out.”
Shutdown History
This would be the 15th shutdown since 1981.
Past shutdowns have varied in length and severity.
OMB has yet to issue contingency plans for agencies.
Shutdowns typically freeze about one-quarter of the federal budget.
The last shutdown lasted 35 days under Trump in 2018-2019.
